New Hampshire certifies Biden victory in presidential vote



DURHAM, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire certified its presidential election results Wednesday in favor of Joe Biden.

In an unanimous vote, the Executive Council, an advisory body to Republican Gov. Chris Sununu, voted to certify the results in the record-setting election.

Biden defeated President Donald Trump 424,921 votes to 365,654. Libertarian presidential candidate Jo Jorgensen garnered 13,325 votes.

The Associated Press had already declared Biden the winner of New Hampshire on election night.

Trump narrowly lost to Hillary Clinton in 2016 in the state, which has four Electoral College votes.

Executive Councilor Andru Volinsky, a Democrat, thanked people who worked at the polls and said he wanted to ”state clearly for the record that there was no evidence of fraud about our election processes and say that I am honored to vote on this item today.”
Sununu, who endorsed Trump’s reelection, said New Hampshire’s elections are “secure, accurate, and reliable.”

“I thank (Secretary of State) Bill Gardner, our town moderators and clerks, and all local election officials for delivering results to the people of New Hampshire timely and accurately, just as they have always done,” Sununu said after the vote.

The Executive Council also certified the congressional results in the November election. All those races were called by the AP on election night or soon after midnight.

Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen beat Republican Corky Messner. U.S. Rep. Chris Pappas, a Democrat, defeated Republican Matt Mowers to win a second term in the 1st Congressional District. Democratic Rep. Annie Kuster beat Republican Steve Negron to win a fifth term in the 2nd District.

A record number of ballots were cast. The secretary of state said there were 814,092 ballots cast, surpassing the record set in the 2016 general election by more than 58,000 ballots.

The state temporarily expanded eligibility for absentee voting this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Just under a third of voters took that option.
