Vietnam police rescue Chinese businessman kidnapped by compatriot for ransom

In a dramatic turn of events, Vietnamese police successfully rescued a Chinese businessman who had been kidnapped by a group of individuals seeking a VND4.5 billion (US$185,700) ransom. The incident unfolded in the southern province of Binh Duong, where law enforcement officers were able to track down the alleged kidnappers using information obtained from their ransom demands.

The primary suspect, Zhao Xin, a 37-year-old Chinese national, had entered Vietnam on a tourist visa in July and was residing in Binh Duong with his Vietnamese girlfriend, Duong Thuy Ai. Faced with financial difficulties, Xin collaborated with Ai and another Vietnamese accomplice, Nguyen Khanh Vi, to orchestrate the kidnapping scheme.

The trio, armed and motivated by the need for money, targeted a Chinese director of an interior design company in Binh Duong. On the morning of the incident, they intercepted the victim's car, forcibly took him to a local warehouse, and demanded a ransom of VND4.5 billion for his release.

As the victim's family negotiated with the kidnappers, they also contacted the police. The kidnappers repeatedly made ransom demands, changing the location for the exchange. Law enforcement, monitoring the calls, successfully pinpointed the location where the businessman was being held captive.

In a swift and well-coordinated operation, the police moved in, rescued the victim, and apprehended the entire group on the same day. The suspects, Zhao Xin, Duong Thuy Ai, and Nguyen Khanh Vi, have reportedly confessed to their involvement in the kidnapping plot.

Authorities are now conducting further investigations into the incident, aiming to uncover additional details and motives behind the crime. The successful resolution of this case highlights the effectiveness of law enforcement efforts in responding to and thwarting criminal activities, contributing to public safety and security in the region.
